POSITIVE ROLE MODEL AWARD FOR GENDER –
Tessa is a passionate advocate for women, keen to encourage younger generations, especially girls to consider careers in STEM, aerospace and aviation. Her childhood dream of becoming an astronaut inspired her to complete a Master’s degree in Astrophysics at Manchester University. After which, Tessa worked tirelessly to finance her pilot training. She was chosen from 3,500 applicants to undertake Astronaut selection for TV show “Astronauts: Do you have what it takes?”. A Boeing 787 Dreamliner pilot, Tessa is a spokeswoman for equality, having experienced sexism, racism and homophobia firsthand within aviation. Currently 6% of pilots are women. As an active member of Women in Aviation society, Tessa contributes her time to schools and communities, changing perceptions of what pilots look like and empowering women to go for their goals. Tessa aspires to ensure 50% aviation gender balance within her lifetime.
