POSITIVE ROLE MODEL AWARD FOR DISABILITY –
Terry is a pioneering an inspirational leader of disability hate crime advocacy services in Northern Ireland who, having overcome immense personal adversity, has transformed the landscape for survivors of disability hate crime across the region. Compelled in his early forties to leave a stressful and demanding job in the civil service due to diminishing health and diagnoses of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia, Terry struggled with his own mental health in the face of premature retirement from a career he both excelled at and loved. Today, Terry is the disability hate crime advocate at Leonard Cheshire in Northern Ireland, making a real difference in the lives of the people he advocates for. Going beyond the requirements of his professional role, Terry is regularly on-call and has emerged as a regional spokesperson for disability hate crime, spearheading campaigns to increase awareness of hate crime.
