COMMUNITY ORGANISATION AWARD FOR RACE, RELIGION & FAITH –
Founded by Shuranjeet Singh, Taraki is a movement which works alongside Punjabi communities to reshape their approaches to mental health. Currently, mental health is a topic with a distinctive ‘taboo’ in Punjabi communities and subsequently people experiencing mental ill-health may find it difficult to connect with appropriate support. This is what Taraki looks to change. Shuranjeet saw that conversations around mental health in mainstream society were not being conducted as widely in Punjabi communities, so Taraki works to take Punjabis from a state of little education and awareness, to one where confidence and support around mental health is readily available. This remarkable organisation has delivered talks at four Gurdware (Sikh temples), organised mental health workshops at five universities, and has developed three monthly ‘open forums’ in Central London and Birmingham, all within 18 months of its creation!
