COMMUNITY ORGANISATION AWARD FOR DISABILITY –
SignHealth is the Deaf people’s health charity and provides award-winning services in British Sign Language in social care, psychological therapy and domestic abuse. The majority of its 120 staff are Deaf people, at all levels of the organisation including its senior management and trustee board, which won the Charity Governance Award 2019 for Board Inclusion and Diversity. In 2010, SignHealth launched the UK’s only domestic abuse support service for Deaf women (DeafHope). Over the last eight years, the service has supported approx. 500 Deaf female survivors and their children into safety and independence, in addition to delivering abuse prevention workshops to approx. 500 Deaf young people. The charity has worked with universities to develop the first BSL accredited training for PWPs (Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners) and IDVAs (Independent Domestic Violence Advocates) and they remain the only organisation employing Deaf IDVAs in the UK.
