COMMUNITY ORGANISATION AWARD FOR RACE, RELIGION & FAITH –
Queen’s Park is a disadvantaged community in Bedford, a town roughly 50 miles north of London. According to the local authority, the area is among the 20-30% most deprived areas in England. The project started in 2012 and is located in a public open space close to the river Ouse in Queen’s Park, in an area local’s call ‘The Slipe’. This project encourages local people of all ages, faiths and genders to come together to care for their environment. Managed by resident volunteers, the project emphasises the positive benefits of shared engagement through helping the orchard to thrive, enhancing the wellbeing and cohesion of all who live and work within this diverse community. The committee have representatives from the Mosques, the Church, Gurdwara, local businesses, local residents, the children centre, local organisations and schools.
