Paul O’Grady is a comedian, television presenter, actor, writer, and radio DJ. Paul achieved notability in the London gay scene during the 1980s with his drag queen character, Lily Savage, with which he went mainstream in the 1990s. He subsequently dropped the character and in the 2000s became the presenter of a range of television and radio shows, most notably The Paul O’Grady Show. As a trailblazer and advocate of the LGBT+ community, Paul has helped to change the narrative around gay men on British television. More recently, Paul took on hosting duties of Blind Dates – the show formerly presented by his best mate, the late Cilla Black – and insisted that same-sex couples were involved so as to bring the show into the 21st Century. In 2014, Paul joined a public protest in the UK against Russia’s introduction of a law under Vladimir Putin which prevented the promotion of homosexuality to children.
