Marie Hirst & Louise Hannon | LD & Autism Disco | Rotherham, UK
Community Organisation (Disability)
We set out to enable a individual with disabilities to get a job as no one would support his need. Myself and Louise set out with a raffle book to raise funds to purchase a speaker to put together our very own LD & Autism Disco. We raised enough funds for a speaker and within weeks we set up our very own LD disco. The disco soon grew to such levels that we had to move venues to somewhere larger to support the need of the diverse client group to which we delivered a fantastic evening each week which enables people with disabilities to have a fun, interactive and safe environment to meet new people, sing and dance the night away.
The entire local community and councillors commended our voluntary efforts and promoted our evening while supporting us to enable more people to come and enjoy the evening.
The disco has gone from strength to strength stamping out the stigma of disabilities and enabling many communities far and wide to attend. Every week we have new people attending with their families, support workers and friends.
To promote ability we’ve styled the disco to meet the needs of each individual that attends enabling jobs for those that wish on the night and awards for individual achievements, along with dancing competitions, karaoke, raffle and bingo.
The people who attend have a diverse array of needs and we do our very best to enable them all to take a active and positive role in the evening empowering them to feel great pride in their own achievements while having lots of fun and laughs with the new LD community which we have created.
Clients visit from Swinton Rotherham, Sheffield, Doncaster and Wakefield and each week they leave us fantastic reviews which can be found on our “weekly ld & autism disco” Facebook page.
We have extended to the point of a local company donating us the funds to purchase brand new equipment and we now have a regular DJ which supports us weekly and enables us to join in and interact with all involved.
