POSITIVE ROLE MODEL AWARD FOR RACE, RELIGION & FAITH –
Irish Traveller, Martin Gallagher, actively campaigns for GRT (Gypsy, Roma & Traveller) rights, whether that be challenging hate speech on social media or raising awareness of racism within politics and other institutions. Martin works alongside decision makers and power holders to influence policy and decisions that affect the GRT community, challenging discrimination and racism on an individual basis but also structurally and institutionally. Martin often writes for magazines such as Traveller’s Voice, and his blog ‘Learning to Dad’ covers issues such as mental health and documents his life as an Irish Traveller/dad. With Irish Travellers, males are six times more likely, and females seven times more likely to commit suicide. Martin hopes to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions through his writing but also make talking about mental health more accessible and acceptable for his community.
