POSITIVE ROLE MODEL AWARD FOR LGBT –
A powerful force within the LGBT sphere, Kate Ward has been part of the NHS for 16 years and has worked in various clinical roles in mental health services in Leeds, currently as a Practice Learning Facilitator. In 2017, along with a colleague she founded a network called Rainbow Alliance, as, whilst studying a masters degree in mental health, Kate was taken aback by evidence of higher rates of depression, anxiety and substance misuse in the LGBT+ community; Not to mention increased risk of suicide and self harm. The Rainbow Alliance brings LGBT+ health inequalities under a spotlight and calls for action in improving access & quality of services for LGBT+ people. It is a movement consisting of staff, service users & LGBT+ people and they work together on identified project goals. Kate is also working with the University of Leeds on a study which explores staff attitudes towards exploring sexuality.
