COMMUNITY ORGANISATION AWARD FOR RACE, RELIGION & FAITH –
Cycle Sisters is registered charity and volunteer-run Muslim women’s cycling group that started in 2016 in Waltham Forest. Their aim is to address the inequality amongst Muslim women in participation in cycling. Their supportive and accessible led rides provide a culturally sensitive safe space for women to gain confidence and discover the joys of cycling, and in the longer term achieve the associated health and well-being benefits cycling is proven to have. The group caters to the specific needs of Muslim women including clothing, culturally appropriate rest stops and factoring in religious obligations such as prayers and fasting. Cultural barriers are challenged through the visible and inspirational example ride leaders and participants prove that Muslim women DO cycle! This marvellous organisation has delivered over 100 weekly women only cycle rides in Waltham Forest leading to some inspiring outcomes.
