Hi, I’m Shona Thompson, a third-year nursing student from Lancashire with a deep commitment to both healthcare and advocacy for the LGBTQIA+ community. As a transgender woman who has fully transitioned, I understand first-hand the challenges and experiences that many in the LGBTQIA+ community face, especially in navigating healthcare systems. My journey has not only shaped my career aspirations but also fuelled my passion for advocating for the rights and wellbeing of those within the LGBTQIA+ community.
Throughout my nursing studies, I’ve been driven to ensure that everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, has access to compassionate, informed, and inclusive healthcare. As a future healthcare professional, I strive to break down barriers and educate others on the importance of inclusivity, empathy, and respect for all patients. I believe that my unique experiences as a transgender woman equip me with the ability to offer support, understanding, and advocacy for patients who may face similar challenges.
In addition to my nursing studies, I am an active advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community, dedicating my time to raising awareness about issues that disproportionately affect LGBTQIA+ individuals, such as mental health, access to healthcare, and discrimination. My goal is to amplify the voices of those who are often marginalized, ensuring that they have the resources, support, and representation they deserve.
Being a fully transitioned transgender woman has given me a strong sense of purpose, and I am passionate about using my platform to inspire others within the LGBTQIA+ community, especially those struggling with their own identity or navigating complex healthcare systems. I hope to continue being a role model, offering guidance, hope, and advocacy for the next generation of LGBTQIA+ individuals.
