Positive Role Model Award

Positive Role Model Award for Disability: Sponsor - BT

Nominee Profile

Location: Hampshire
My name is Debbie. I am 57 and live at home with my husband Scott and our 2 dogs and 1 cat. We have 6 children, 2 grandchildren and another on the way. I have ADHD, Chronic Asthma, Fibromyalgia and HSD as well as other comorbid conditions. My working background is in early years and special education with 35 plus years’ experience. I worked in special schools, was a Portage Home Visitor and then an Area Inclusion Co-ordinator. I became a Makaton Tutor 13 years ago and have taught hundreds of people to sign so they can support those with communication needs within their care. I used to run communication classes for preschool children. I set up my business Elfi Says due to my passion of making communication accessible to all and raising awareness of disabilities and inclusion. Since I’ve had to limit my work due to my own disabilities, I’ve taken to social media, particularly TikTok, where I have built a highly engaged community I have collaborated with families and carers to help integrate Makaton into daily routines. Ive been recognised by peers and the wider community as a warm authentic, and empowering figure for both disabled and non disabled people alike Makaton is my passion and I believe everyone should have access to it. My presence as a disabled educator allows others to see themselves represented in a positive, empowered light.
