Nominee Profile
Location: London
I'm Rory, my pronouns are he/him. I'm a person who sometimes stammers, a gay man and socially engaged artist and photographer.
My motivation within diversity is to use socially engaged artistic practice to raise awareness and question negative assumptions of fluency, communication and representation of disabled and/or neurodivergent individuals.
I have navigated many barriers to be in the position I am today where people somehow consider me a role model! I am most of the time now a 'confident' speaker and am fortunate to be in the position where I can support others who are disabled and/or neurodivergent ensure they are listened to. Stammering is still very stigmised, and holds many negative assumptions within society. I hope that through my work I can break these assumptions down and create a new dialogue.
I'm a graduate of UAL: London College of Communication where I was one of the first stammering artists to exhibit an audio visual installation simulating stammering titled ‘The Open Mouth That Offers Up Nothing’. https://www.standard.co.uk/lifestyle/london-life/rory-sheridan-the-mouth-that-opens-up-nothing-a3890366.html
I currently volunteer for 50 Million Voices expanding my knowledge in equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace and supporting our EDI efforts in stammering. I am currently working to recreate my artistic practice exploring intersectionalities with stammering within the dysfluent community. My current role is at Mencap, the voice of learning disability. I support and lead on inclusion within governance, embedding good practice.
I’m for ever grateful and thankful for the support of my family, friends, the STAMMA, my colleagues past and present, and my mentors and allies. I wouldn’t be here without you all. This award will really support my endeavours to further my artistic practice in a transient, still stigmised dysfluent world and to grow as an inclusive role model leader in the disability space.
