Positive Role Model Award

Positive Role Model Award for Disability: Sponsor - OVO Group

Nominee Profile

Location: Leeds
Many people also know me as Jojo Snow . I have ADHD and Autism and a load of comorbid health issues. I am Group Coordinator for Misfits Family Support Grouo. I also manage Facebook page #theadhdlife where I’m known as #adhdgirl.

I advocate for adults and children across the city for lots of different issues but mostly they relate to ADHD and Autism.

I have researched neuroscience and genetics for many years in order to advocate for myself and my children, I hate to watch people struggling, especially children, so this is where my passion stems from.

I would like to win this not to give myself attention as I do become weird and struggle with nice things about myself, it has taken me days to write this. And delete and re write. What I would hope wining an award might achieve, would be opening up a pathway for the voice of the children and young adults I mostly represent, to actually be heard. I don’t need the award as an advertisement we are not a charity, I don’t need to look for case work it seeks me out. I don’t need an award so that everybody thinks I’m great. I help those who come to me because I feel their pain and see they are lost. Not for personal reward. The biggest reward and recognition would be any form of opportunity to progress towards the very big and real change that is needed.

The education system is not fit for purpose, nor is the CAMHS system, albeit it has hugely improved, whilst the education system is failing huge chunks of society with no care or understanding of the consequence on future generations. It does not see the children who this system has so tragically failed in the last decade . This is the reason why I would like you to vote for this nomination. I don’t want a round of applause or bunches of flowers. I want somebody to listen to the voices of the so many children who have themselves made me their trusted adult and who deserve their human right to inclusive and accessible education - and quality health provision; the lack of which basic human rights, should not be masked by excuse about funds and school policies, particularly when true knowledge of neurodiversity is absent amongst many professionals. Maybe this award could lead to that opportunity and if so then I want that opportunity, so that’s why you should vote for me. To see if there’s another platform for my big mouth! Because this isn’t about me it’s about all of those children whose dreams are crushed by a system that doesn’t understand how they think or learn and tries to force the impossible to be possible. I want to stop this practice that is where my passion stems from. I want the pain of watching my child friendless throughout school and absent for four years of education to actually make a difference. It has shattered my heart into pieces at times seeing my son’s struggles. He is the reason I try to make a change, he is the reason I have been there for everybody else. I would like nothing more than for the legacy of his struggles to create a better understanding and true change across education health and social care services for children. Vote for me if you want to vote for change and vote for me for my son for being the heart of our inspiration.
