Angels of Freedom launched in 2017 with the initial aim of providing a visible supportive presence within the Leeds LGBT+ bar scene area for the community, focusing on community safety, personal support and the promotion of social & support groups. Since then, they’ve continued to undertake street engagement in the community every Friday evening, speaking with people participating in the night-time economy of the city and directing them to available groups for support or alternative social opportunities, such as inclusive sports groups. On the spot Mental Health support needs were quickly identified as a priority development area for their volunteers, and Mental Health First Aid training was coordinated for delivery to their team. They recently launched the Leeds Freedom Families project, providing a forum for peer support of family & friends of LGBT+ people along with opportunities to champion the community.
