COMMUNITY ORGANISATION AWARD FOR GENDER –

The charity was founded by Debi Steven in 2013, having herself survived a rape at 11 years of age and driven by her belief that all women and girls should be empowered to use their physicality to protect themselves. Debi has built her 25 year career teaching personal safety workshops to individuals, schools, universities, companies. ABS offers training free of charge to women and girls at risk of gender-based violence and works in disadvantaged communities in South Africa, India, the UK and Curacao. This remarkable organisation offers two educational programmes: the Empowerment through Self-Defence Programme for women and girls and the Hero Empathy Programme for young boys. ABS has taught over 50,000 beneficiaries.
