Amadudu Women's Refuge, established on International Women's Day in 1991 by a grassroots group of Black women from the L8 Community, stands as a vital sanctuary for Black and minoritised women and children escaping domestic abuse. For over 33 years, Amadudu is a trailblazer specialised refuge service, addressing the unique challenges faced by its community, including forced marriage, honour-based violence, and immigration status threats. With a dedicated team of eleven local Black women, Amadudu offers holistic support from temporary accommodation to resettlement, encompassing counselling, advocacy, financial aid, and educational opportunities. Recently expanding to include six new safe houses this year, provide safety for 12 large families, doubling their capacity. Beyond direct service provision, Amadudu influences local and national policies, informs government funding, and advocates tirelessly for diversity and inclusion in domestic abuse strategies.
