2022 Shortlisted Nominee
Positive Role Model Award: Disability
A young girl living day to day life with Tourette’s, 12-year-old Lucy-Marie Phillips is a visible advocate, raising awareness about the condition and seeking to achieve inclusion for all. After developing an involuntary motion in her face and repetitive noises , Lucy-Marie was given a diagnosis of Tourette Syndrome. As a result of this diagnosis, Tic attacks became a regular occurrence, with one being so severe it caused her jaw to lock completely for over 24 hours. Noticing the lack of education around Tourette’s, Lucy-Marie has taken to educating people about the condition in an effort to break down the stigma that she now experiences daily. In addition to supporting a petition to the Welsh Government to seek more help and provisions for those in Wales, Lucy-Marie is also a budding author, successfully publishing ‘I can’t make it stop’ – a personal diary on living with Tourette’s Syndrome, designed to provide understanding of the condition.
