Positive Role Model Award: Gender
At the age of 17, Jeewan had to give up her studies to enter into an arranged marriage. However, Jeewan refused to brood over her misery and invested her energy into helping others in similar situation. Jeewan offered support to young Nepalese mothers in Singapore, who were struggling with adjustment issues through “Mothers and Toddlers Group”. Furthermore, Jeewan provided free counselling support to the women in the Gurkha community for nine years and carried out free weekly training for five years to train volunteer counsellors. This group now tends to the needs of 5,000 plus Gurkhas. Currently, Jeewan is a Service Manager at SENDIASS and champions for disabled children and their parents’ voices to be at the heart of the policy making process. She has also been instrumental in successfully setting up 3 support groups across Birmingham including the Birmingham Women’s support Group.
