Becky Choat is the Projects Lead at SWAN Autism (Scotland).
As a late-diagnosed autistic woman, Becky brings both her lived experience and professional knowledge into her role, with a background in primary education and health and social care services.
Becky is passionate about breaking down barriers, shifting mindsets and understanding around what it means to be autistic and how to create spaces, relationships and services in neuroaffirming ways.
Responsible for the creation, development and delivery of the post-diagnosis support at SWAN, Becky has supported thousands of autistic individuals who have recently discovered their autistic identity to explore and consider what that means for them, through groups, 1-1 support, and webinars.
Becky also works to inform, challenge myths and misunderstandings, and work with other services across all sectors to improve support and service provision, making them more inclusive and accessible
Some recent pieces of work have included working with the Eating Disorders and Autism Collaborative (EDAC), bringing together new partnerships to improve eating disorder research, understanding and practice for autistic individuals within health.
Delivering training to over 1000 NHS staff for NHS Education Scotland on 'Understanding and Supporting Autistic Individuals in Mental Health and Suicidal Crisis'
Partnership working with Paths for All to deliver training and resource development for walk leaders
Speaking at both NHS GGC and NHS Lothian 2024 Equality and Diversity Conferences
Developing and Delivering Training around 'Autistic Experiences of Pregnancy and Parenting' and 'Autism and Eating Disorder' Training for multiple NHS areas and other organisations
Work to raise awareness of violence against autistic women and girls including work with Police Scotland, interviews on BBC The Nine and delivering 'Supporting Autistic Survivors' Training
